It is projected that Samsung Electronics' global market share in the foldable phone segment will decline by about 10 percentage points this year compared to last year.
According to a report released on July 22 by Taiwanese market research firm TrendForce, global foldable phone shipments are expected to reach 19.8 million units this year, with Samsung Electronics' market share forecast to drop from 45.2% last year to 35.4% this year.
TrendForce stated, "Samsung, which is leading the foldable segment, has achieved significant improvements in hinge design, crease visibility, and form factor with the recent launch of its next-generation flagship model, the Galaxy Z Fold7." However, the firm also analyzed that "intensifying competition with other brands is weakening Samsung's dominance."
The report further noted, "Huawei is expected to maintain its strong position in the Chinese market and secure second place globally with a 34.3% market share this year." It also stated, "Honor and Lenovo (Motorola) are projected to increase their market shares from 6% and 5.5% last year to 9.1% and 7.6%, respectively, this year."
Xiaomi is expected to see its market share rise from 3% last year to 5.1% this year, while other brands such as Oppo and Vivo are projected to collectively account for 8.5%.
TrendForce also predicted that the market landscape could change if Apple launches its first foldable phone in the second half of next year.
The report stated, "Apple's product is expected to feature a 5.5-inch external display and a 7.8-inch internal display." It added, "Apple's entry is anticipated to significantly boost consumer interest and acceptance of foldable phones, especially among high-end users."
The report further analyzed, "Apple's debut in 2026 is expected to serve as a turning point for the popularization of foldable phones and to inject new vitality into the overall smartphone industry."
