A firefighter from Jindo Fire Station in Jeonnam minimized casualties by quickly carrying out rescue operations after witnessing a traffic accident while off duty on his way home.
According to Jindo Fire Station on July 22, Namjung Park, a firefighter at Jindo 119 Safety Center, witnessed a rear-end collision on the highway near Yugyo-ri, Samhyang-eup, Muan-gun, Jeonnam (in the direction from Jukrim JC to Mokpo IC) at around 10:16 a.m. on July 20. He immediately began rescue operations and saved lives at the scene.
The accident occurred as a result of a collision between a truck and a passenger car. At the time, Park had just finished his shift and was on his way home. He immediately pulled his car over to the shoulder, called 119, and ran to the accident site.
At the scene, the truck driver was outside the vehicle, but inside the passenger car, a woman who was drifting in and out of consciousness and a 7-year-old girl were trapped. Park quickly approached the vehicle, rescued the child and the female passenger, administered first aid, and safely handed the patients over to the paramedics who arrived shortly after.
Park, a veteran firefighter with 10 years of experience, responded calmly and with dedication, drawing on his extensive field experience. His quick judgment and actions are credited with preventing what could have been a major casualty incident.
Jaechul Kim, chief of Jindo Fire Station, stated, "Firefighter Namjung Park, who protected lives with a sense of duty even while off duty, is a role model for all of us. We will continue to provide field-oriented firefighting services that prioritize the safety of the public above all else."
