Dalseo District in Daegu Delivers 25 Lightweight Handcarts to Elderly Waste Paper Collectors Exposed to Traffic Hazards

On July 21, Dalseo District in Daegu (Mayor Taehun Lee) was selected as a beneficiary of the lightweight handcart sponsorship program for elderly waste paper collectors by the Children and Future Foundation. Through the Dalseo District Community Security Council (Chairman Kim Byungwoo), the district delivered 25 lightweight handcarts.

Notably, Dalseo District was the only district in Daegu to be selected for this sponsorship this year, making the event even more meaningful. The initiative was launched in consideration of the reality that elderly individuals who collect waste paper for a living are constantly exposed to outdated equipment and traffic hazards.

The purpose of distributing lightweight handcarts, which are lighter and easier to operate than conventional models, is to reduce physical strain during work and to enhance both safety and mobility for the users.

On this day, safety kits?which included reflective vests, work gloves, fluorescent cooling sleeves, and UV-protection hats?were also distributed. In addition, practical safety training was provided, covering topics such as precautions while walking, how to respond when vehicles approach, and safety rules for nighttime activities, in order to offer real, tangible support.

Going forward, Dalseo District plans to continue providing systematic safety education for elderly waste paper collectors in the area, in cooperation with the police and other relevant agencies.

Taehun Lee, Mayor of Dalseo District, stated, "I hope this will be of some help to the elderly who work quietly and diligently in their daily lives," and added, "We will continue to expand various forms of support so that seniors can work more safely and healthily in the future."
