BISTEP Collaborates with Korea Maritime and Ocean University for Open-Lab Fostering Project
Secures 2.44 Billion KRW in National Funding
Busan Institute for the Promotion of Science and Technology Higher Education (BISTEP, President Kim Youngbu), the dedicated organization for regional science and technology policy based on R&D in Busan, has been selected for the "2025 Regional Industry-Linked University Open-Lab Fostering Support Project" in collaboration with Korea Maritime and Ocean University, leveraging the capabilities of the Busan Leading R&D Support Group.
This project is overseen by the Ministry of Science and ICT and the Korea Technology Commercialization Promotion Agency, and aims to promote the practical commercialization of university-owned technologies and strengthen connections with regional industries.
Through this project, Korea Maritime and Ocean University will receive a total of 2,445 million KRW in national funding by 2026, and plans to actively promote technology commercialization activities in six laboratories, focusing on the marine new industry sector.
As the emphasis on strengthening collaboration with regional R&D support groups has increased since this year, BISTEP, which operates the Busan Leading R&D Support Group, supported Korea Maritime and Ocean University by providing necessary data research, consulting, and other assistance for the preparation of the project proposal. In addition, to ensure stable operation of the Open-Lab and to further strengthen ongoing cooperation, BISTEP signed a business agreement with the Korea Maritime and Ocean University Industry-Academic Cooperation Foundation in May.
Kim Youngbu, President of BISTEP, said, "The selection of the Open-Lab project is the result of collaboration among various organizations, based on the solid commercialization capabilities of Korea Maritime and Ocean University. We are pleased that the Busan R&D Support Group contributed to this achievement," adding, "We will continue to work with regional innovation entities to build a technology commercialization ecosystem and strengthen regional R&D capabilities."
