Green Hydrogen Produced from Hydropower Supplied for the First Time in Korea... Enough to Fuel 40 Hydrogen Vehicles

Green hydrogen produced using hydropower will be supplied to a hydrogen refueling station for the first time in Korea.

The Ministry of Environment and Korea Water Resources Corporation announced on July 22 that they will hold a ceremony on July 23 at the Seongnam Water Purification Plant in Gyeonggi Province to commemorate the shipment of green hydrogen, in cooperation with organizations such as the Korea Automobile Environmental Association and the Korea Hydrogen Environment Association. At this event, they will supply green hydrogen produced from hydropower to a hydrogen refueling station.

This supply of green hydrogen to a hydrogen refueling station is notable for using electricity generated from eco-friendly renewable energy?hydroelectric power?to electrolyze water and produce hydrogen. This is also the first case in Korea of supplying green hydrogen produced in this way to a hydrogen refueling station.

The green hydrogen production facility at the Seongnam Water Purification Plant was established as part of a project launched in 2022 to lay the foundation for expanding the supply of hydrogen vehicles in support of achieving 'carbon neutrality by 2050.' A total of 4.4 billion won was invested in building this facility.

This facility can produce up to 188 kilograms of green hydrogen per day, which is enough to refuel about 40 hydrogen vehicles. The annual production capacity is up to 62 tons. Until September, green hydrogen will be delivered to the Seongnam hydrogen refueling station using transport vehicles. Starting in October, it will be supplied directly via pipelines to a hydrogen refueling station to be installed near the Seongnam Water Purification Plant.

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Environment is also building green hydrogen production facilities using hydropower at the Miryang Dam and the Chungju Dam. Once these facilities are completed in 2028, an additional 1,069 kilograms of green hydrogen can be produced daily, enough to refuel approximately 214 hydrogen passenger cars each day.

The Ministry of Environment and Korea Water Resources Corporation plan to continue promoting the construction of green hydrogen production facilities utilizing renewable energy in close cooperation with local governments. Ryu Pilmu, Director of the Future Air Strategy Division at the Ministry of Environment, stated, "The supply of green hydrogen to hydrogen refueling stations marks a meaningful transition from the demonstration stage to the full-scale utilization stage of green hydrogen, a clean energy source in the era of climate crisis."
