"America can still be a place
where people are afraid
to show who they really are"
Famous American broadcaster Ellen DeGeneres has revealed that she moved to the United Kingdom because of U.S. President Donald Trump.
According to the BBC on July 20 (local time), DeGeneres confirmed during an interview with broadcaster Richard Bacon at a theater in Cheltenham, England, that reports stating she moved to the UK because of President Trump were true.
DeGeneres explained that she and her spouse, Portia de Rossi, originally bought a house in the UK as a vacation home. However, she said, "We arrived here the day before the election, and when I woke up the next day, I received many messages from friends filled with crying emojis. Seeing that, I realized Trump had won the election, and I decided I would stay here."
This is DeGeneres's first official public appearance since relocating to the UK. She expressed satisfaction with her current life, saying it has become "better than before." Sharing her rural life in England through social media, she commented, "Everything is better here, including how animals are treated and the politeness of the people."
As a lesbian, DeGeneres also voiced concern about recent efforts in the United States to overturn the Supreme Court's decision legalizing same-sex marriage. She said, "America can still be a place where people are afraid to show who they really are," and added, "If same-sex marriage is truly invalidated, I will get married again in the UK."
DeGeneres and her same-sex partner de Rossi were married in California in 2008. DeGeneres stated, "I want to live in a place where people are not afraid to show who they are. I want to live in a society where everyone can accept others and their differences."
