Jungnang District Strengthens Customized Home Health Management for Vulnerable Groups in Preparation for Heatwaves

Concurrent Operation of AI and IoT-Based Non-Face-to-Face Health Management Services

Jungnang District in Seoul (District Mayor Ryu Gyeonggi) announced on July 21 that it has designated the period from May 15 to the end of September as the "Heatwave Intensive Management Period" in order to respond to the full-scale summer heatwave. The district is strengthening a customized health management system for vulnerable groups such as the elderly, people with chronic diseases, and people with disabilities.

Heat-related illnesses can occur when individuals are exposed to high temperatures for extended periods, leading to symptoms such as headaches, dizziness, muscle cramps, fatigue, and decreased consciousness. If left untreated, these conditions can become life-threatening. In particular, the Korea Meteorological Administration has forecasted an increase in average temperatures and the number of heatwave days this summer, further highlighting the importance of an integrated management system.

The district has visiting nurses and doctors who make regular home visits or conduct safety check calls to monitor the health status of the target groups. They also provide tailored education and counseling to prevent heat-related illnesses. In particular, for elderly people living alone and those who collect recyclable materials, the district is providing heatwave preparedness items such as cooling tissues and cooling sleeves, thereby strengthening on-site, experience-based health protection services.

In addition, the district is operating a non-face-to-face health monitoring system by integrating the "Oneul Health" app, an artificial intelligence (AI) and Internet of Things (IoT)-based health management platform, with smartwatches and intelligent devices such as blood pressure and blood glucose monitors.

Through this system, the district is able to monitor key health indicators of people with chronic diseases and high-risk individuals in real time, and respond to sudden changes in their health status. The district also regularly provides education on lifestyle improvement and information on the prevention of heat-related illnesses.

Jungnang District Mayor Ryu Gyeonggi stated, "As heatwaves can be particularly fatal for vulnerable groups, we will protect the safety of our residents through integrated management that combines in-person care and smart technology."
