Suncheon City in South Jeolla Province announced on July 21 that it has recently completed the "Street Tree Risk Assessment Service" and will now actively proceed with maintenance projects for hazardous trees. This is the first proactive measure in South Jeolla Province to prevent street tree toppling accidents and to create a safe pedestrian environment in response to the risks of natural disasters caused by climate change.

The assessment, conducted throughout June, targeted 968 Zelkova trees in the Geumdang district. Using specialized equipment, a detailed investigation was carried out to thoroughly analyze the structural defects of the trees and the risk of toppling.

The inspection team comprehensively examined the shape of the trees, trunk inclination, and root condition. Advanced equipment such as the TS Meter electrical resistance tester and endoscopic cameras were used to enhance accuracy.

As a result, 41 Zelkova trees with confirmed structural defects were classified as "trees recommended for action." The city plans to carry out maintenance work, including removal and tree surgery, on these trees during July.

A city official stated, "Protecting the lives and safety of our citizens is of utmost importance," and added, "We will continue to create a sustainable ecological city environment through regular safety inspections in the future."
