The Korea Photonics Technology Institute announced on July 21 that it has begun development and demonstration of the nation’s first integrated AI- and robot-based public restroom hygiene and safety management service, in partnership with LinuxIT Co., Ltd.
As part of Jangseong County’s “2025 Smart Village Distribution and Expansion Project,” the two organizations are developing a real-time hygiene and safety monitoring system utilizing AI-powered autonomous mobile robots.
The team led by Dr. Son Myungwoo at the Korea Photonics Technology Institute is responsible for AI-based cleaning robot operation technologies, including verifying restroom entrance open/close status, three-dimensional distance sensing, and automatic cleaning area setting. LinuxIT will develop the autonomous mobility platform, monitoring system, and operational processes, and plans to conduct demonstrations at public restrooms in Jangseong County.
This technology is an “all-in-one” autonomous system capable of comprehensive management, including expanded cleaning coverage, detection of foreign substances, illegal cameras, and damage, and can be applied across a wide range of public facilities.
Dr. Son stated, “By driving digital-based innovation in public hygiene and establishing a cleaning robot ecosystem, we will meet practical demand, contribute to improved working environments, and support job transitions.”
