Plenty of Fun Activities Including Water Playground and Craft Workshops
Jinan County in North Jeolla Province will hold the Jinan Plateau Watermelon Festival on August 2 and 3 at the Chelyeon Park area in Donghyang-myeon.
According to the county on July 21, this watermelon festival has established itself as a representative summer event, promoting the high-quality Jinan watermelons grown in the pure natural environment of the highlands, and providing an opportunity for residents and tourists to enjoy together.
Watermelons produced in the Jinan plateau region are known nationwide as a representative summer agricultural product, prized for their high sugar content and crisp texture. In particular, the large temperature differences between day and night, clean water, and eco-friendly cultivation methods have contributed to their reputation as premium watermelons.
This year's festival will feature a variety of hands-on programs and family-friendly events centered around watermelons.
The first day of the festival will begin with a traditional farmers' band parade and a special performance by the Donghyang Elementary School children's choir, followed by a commemorative ceremony at 11 a.m. After the ceremony, the main events will include the Watermelon King Award, a watermelon eating contest, a watermelon quiz, performances by local cultural and arts clubs, and regional organizations. From 5 p.m., a singing contest featuring famous singers will add excitement to the midsummer night.
On the second day, five athletic competitions, including Tuho (a traditional Korean throwing game), will be held, along with a variety of programs such as the Exciting Arts Bus, performances by the Pyongyang Arts Troupe, Gakseoli performances, and local singer showcases.
Ongoing events will include discounted sales of watermelon, Korean beef, and pork, an exhibition of Watermelon King entries, and watermelon crafts, offering visitors a chance to experience fresh and unique local specialties. There will also be food stalls serving ice-cold beer, watermelon skin, and blueberry Makgeolli, as well as a range of fun activities such as an air bounce water playground and craft workshop experiences.
Park Gichun, chairman of the Jinan Plateau Watermelon Festival Organizing Committee, said, "As this festival is held in honor of the pride of Jinan Plateau, the watermelon, we will do our utmost to prepare. We hope many people will visit Jinan, experience the charm of plateau watermelons firsthand, and enjoy a refreshing summer."
