"Gongju Devastated by Record Rainfall"... City Mobilizes Military and Volunteers for Full-Scale Recovery Effort

Gongju City in South Chungcheong Province has suffered significant damage due to the recent record-breaking heavy rainfall, and is now mobilizing all available administrative resources, including military units and volunteers, to focus on recovery efforts.

According to the Gongju City Disaster and Safety Countermeasures Headquarters, from July 16 to July 19, the Gongju area experienced an average of 301mm of rainfall over four days. In particular, Yugueup and Sinpung-myeon recorded 352mm and 351mm, respectively, with the heaviest damage concentrated in these areas.

The heavy rain resulted in a total of four injuries: two residents and one village head in Jeongan-myeon, as well as one city hall employee, all of whom are currently receiving medical treatment.

There was also extensive damage to facilities. Public facilities suffered a total of 327 cases of damage, including 119 cases involving rivers, 66 involving roads, and 80 involving water management facilities. Private property damage amounted to 202 cases, including 68 houses and 63 cases involving farmland and forest land. The total number of damage cases reached 529.

As of July 21, recovery has been completed for 103 public facilities and 98 private properties, and the city is continuing rapid restoration efforts in the remaining affected areas.

The city is accelerating recovery work by combining the efforts of military units and volunteers.

A total of 1,690 personnel and 175 pieces of equipment have been deployed. On July 20, 54 soldiers from the 3rd Battalion of the 3585th Unit and 81 volunteers supported recovery operations in Yugue, Jeongan, Sagok, and Sinpung.

On this day as well, about 190 soldiers and volunteers are engaged in recovery work at the Singwan riverside park, as well as flooded homes and farmland.

The city is strengthening publicity for damage reporting to prevent omissions, and plans to confirm damage through the NDMS (National Disaster Management System) and complete emergency restoration as soon as possible.

In addition, 13 disinfection teams consisting of 39 personnel have been deployed to conduct intensive disinfection in flood-affected areas, livestock farms, and other sanitation-vulnerable locations such as sewers.

Mayor Choi Woncheol stated, "We are prioritizing the lives and safety of citizens and concentrating all administrative resources on recovery," and added, "We will do our utmost to thoroughly monitor for additional damage and provide prompt support."
