Dobongsan Tourism Town and Camping Arboretum Projects Selected as Final Candidates
Plans to Transform Underutilized Greenbelt Areas into Tourism and Leisure Hubs
The Dobong District Office in Seoul (headed by Mayor Oh Eon-seok) has announced that its ‘Dobongsan Tourism Town Development Project’ and ‘Camping Arboretum Development Project’ have been selected as final candidates for the ‘Northeastern Seoul New Growth Hub Rapid Promotion Project’ and will be developed as tourism resources.
With this selection, Dobong District plans to pursue the restructuring of urban spaces by comprehensively developing damaged and underutilized areas within the greenbelt. The district also aims to link these projects with existing cultural and leisure facilities such as Changpowon, Peace Culture Bunker, and Darakwon Sports Park, and to integrate them with the upcoming Sports Park and Hanok Village projects on the relocated chemical unit site nearby. Through these efforts, the area will be fostered as a strategic hub for tourism, culture, and ecology in northeastern Seoul.
The district has been promoting the ‘Dobongsan Tourism Town Development Project’ in the Dobongsan area (282-26 Dobong-dong) to address issues of traffic congestion and poor landscape. This project aims to dramatically improve the previously chaotic and complicated traffic environment around Dobongsan Station and to create a new tourism hub that harmonizes with the outstanding natural scenery of Dobongsan.
To achieve this, the district plans to move the congested traffic facilities near Dobongsan Station underground and to construct a range of integrated tourism facilities above, including a tourist information center, an experiential mountain museum, and a tourist hotel.
In the area surrounding the Dobong-dong Resource Circulation Center (San 2-1 Dobong-dong), the district is pursuing the ‘Camping Arboretum Development Project.’ To address unplanned development and damaged green spaces in this region, the district plans to create a natural rest area featuring an arboretum, recreational facilities, and walking trails. Both projects will begin feasibility studies and development planning services in the second half of this year, followed by administrative procedures and the preparation of basic and detailed designs.
Oh Eon-seok, Mayor of Dobong District, stated, “Being selected for the Seoul New Growth Hub Project marks an important milestone for revitalizing tourism and leisure culture in the northeastern region. Based on Dobong District’s exceptional natural environment, we will establish high-quality cultural and tourism facilities to enhance residents’ quality of life and contribute to the balanced development of Seoul.”
Meanwhile, the Seoul Metropolitan Government recently held a Balanced Development Review Council, where it comprehensively reviewed 14 projects proposed by eight autonomous districts and determined which would proceed rapidly and which would be considered for mid- to long-term review. The New Growth Hub Project is a strategic priority initiative aimed at strengthening urban competitiveness in the northeastern, southwestern, and northwestern parts of Seoul and promoting balanced development between the Gangnam and Gangbuk areas.
