Hong Kong SCMP Reports
Possible Trump-Xi Summit During APEC in Gyeongju
The South China Morning Post (SCMP) in Hong Kong reported on the 20th (local time) that there is a high possibility that U.S. President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping will hold a summit meeting on the occasion of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit scheduled to take place in Gyeongju at the end of October.
On this day, SCMP, citing multiple sources, reported that the APEC summit, which will be held from October 31 to November 1, offers the optimal opportunity for the two leaders to meet face-to-face.
The newspaper added that President Trump may visit China before attending the APEC summit, or hold a separate summit with President Xi during the event.
President Xi is reportedly highly likely to attend the APEC summit. Although President Trump's attendance has not yet been confirmed, the newspaper reported that senior U.S. officials see a strong possibility of his participation.
Previously, the two leaders had invited each other for reciprocal visits during a phone call last month. The foreign ministers of the U.S. and China also held talks on the sidelines of the East Asia Summit (EAS) Foreign Ministers' Meeting and the ASEAN Regional Forum (ARF) Foreign Ministers' Meeting, both held in Malaysia this month, reaffirming their intention to hold a summit.
If the U.S.-China summit takes place, key issues such as tariffs, fentanyl, rare earth elements, and semiconductors are expected to be discussed.
