14 Dead, 12 Missing in Five Days of Torrential Rains and Landslides... Heavy Damage in Sancheong and Gapyeong (Comprehensive)

Since the 16th, heavy rains and landslides have resulted in 14 deaths and 12 missing persons over five days. In Sancheong, Gyeongnam alone, 8 people have died.


According to the Central Disaster and Safety Countermeasures Headquarters (CDSCH) and the National Fire Agency, as of 11:00 a.m. on the 20th, a total of 14 people have died and 12 are missing nationwide due to the torrential rains over the past five days.

By region, the fatalities include 1 in Osan, Gyeonggi, 2 in Gapyeong, 2 in Seosan, Chungnam, 1 in Dangjin, and 8 in Sancheong, Gyeongnam. The missing include 2 in Buk-gu, Gwangju, 4 in Gapyeong, and 6 in Sancheong.


Currently, rescue and emergency operations are ongoing, so the number of casualties could increase further.


Regarding property damage, there have been 1,920 cases of public facility damage, such as road flooding, soil loss, and river facility collapses. In addition, 2,234 cases of private property damage, including flooded buildings and farmland, have been reported.


Due to this torrential rain, 9,694 households and 13,209 residents from 90 cities, counties, and districts in 14 provinces and metropolitan cities have been evacuated.


From the 16th until 5:00 a.m. on the 20th, the total accumulated precipitation by region was 793.5mm in Sicheon, Sancheong; 699.0mm in Samga, Hapcheon; 621.5mm in Hwagae, Hadong; 600mm in Docheon, Changnyeong; 584.5mm in Haman; 578.3mm in Seosan, Chungnam; and 552.5mm in Bongsan, Damyang, Jeonnam.


A CDSCH official stated, "Today, there will be rain in the Seoul metropolitan area and Gangwon Province, and from late afternoon to evening, showers are expected in inland areas."
