Five Residents Missing After Being Swept Away by Torrential Floods in Gapyeong, Gyeonggi... Daebo Bridge Overflows

In Gapyeong, Gyeonggi Province, which was hit by heavy rainfall in the early morning of July 20, five residents went missing after being swept away by rapidly rising waters.


According to disaster authorities, at around 4:30 a.m. on this day, a resident identified as Lee (80) went missing after being swept away by a torrent in Daebo 1-ri, Jojeong-myeon, Gapyeong County, Gyeonggi Province. Lee was reportedly unable to escape in time due to the rising water while evacuating with family members by car after an evacuation order was issued due to the overflow of Daebo Bridge. The family members who were in the car with Lee managed to escape safely.


Disaster authorities additionally confirmed that four other residents went missing: two in Jojeong-myeon, and one each in Sang-myeon and Buk-myeon.


A flood warning was issued in the Daebo Bridge area at around 2:40 a.m. on this day. At approximately 3:20 a.m., the water level surpassed the critical stage of 6.4 meters and rose to 9.2 meters, causing the Jojeong Stream to overflow. In response, Gapyeong County issued an evacuation order and relocated residents from 15 households in the Daebo Bridge area to higher ground. As of 3:30 a.m. on this day, Jojeong-myeon experienced a torrential downpour of 76 mm per hour. The heavy rain advisory has now been lifted.
