19 Dead or Missing in Five Days of Heavy Rain... 13 Casualties in Sancheong Alone

Due to the torrential rains that began on July 16, a total of 10 people have died and 9 are reported missing over the past five days. Of these, 6 deaths and 7 missing persons were confirmed to be the result of heavy rain and a landslide that occurred in Sancheong, Gyeongnam on July 19.


According to the Ministry of the Interior and Safety and the National Fire Agency, as of 5 a.m. on July 20, the recent heavy rains have resulted in 10 deaths and 9 missing persons.


By region, the fatalities include 1 in Osan, Gyeonggi Province, 2 in Seosan, South Chungcheong Province, 1 in Dangjin, South Chungcheong Province, and 6 in Sancheong, Gyeongnam. The missing persons include 2 in Buk-gu, Gwangju and 7 in Sancheong.

The National Fire Agency stated, "So far, there have been 6 deaths, 2 serious injuries, and 7 missing persons reported in the Sancheong area."


In the case of Sancheong, rescue and emergency operations are still ongoing, so there is a possibility that the number of casualties may increase.


Facility damage has also increased, with 1,920 cases of public facility damage reported, including road flooding, soil erosion, and river facility collapses. There have also been 2,234 cases of private facility damage, such as flooding of buildings and farmland.


From July 16 until 5 a.m. on July 20, cumulative rainfall by region was as follows: Sancheong (Sicheon) 793.5 mm, Hapcheon (Samga) 699 mm, Hadong (Hwage) 621.5 mm, Changnyeong (Docheon) 600 mm, Haman 584.5 mm, Seosan, South Chungcheong Province 578.3 mm, and Damyang (Bongsan), South Jeolla Province 552.5 mm.


As of the morning of July 20, it is expected that the Seoul metropolitan area and the inland and mountainous regions of Gangwon Province will receive around 30 mm of rain per hour.
