High School Senior in Mask Climbs Drainpipe to Break Into Teachers' Office: "Tried to Steal Exam Papers"

Attempted Theft of Midterm Exam Papers in Uljin, North Gyeongsang
Suspects in Andong Exam Paper Leak to Be Referred to Prosecution

Recently in Andong, North Gyeongsang Province, a police investigation has been launched into a case where a temporary teacher, a parent, and an administrative office director allegedly conspired to leak exam papers. Meanwhile, in Uljin, there was an incident where a current student broke into a school and attempted to steal exam papers but failed.

According to the North Gyeongsang Provincial Office of Education and the Uljin Police Station, at around 1 a.m. on April 24, a masked intruder broke into a high school in Uljin. At the time, the school was preparing for the first semester midterm exams.

The intruder attempted to enter the teachers' office on the second floor by climbing a rainwater drainage pipe, but fled immediately when the private security system was triggered. Through analysis of closed-circuit television (CCTV) footage, the police identified student A, who attends the school, as the suspect. The student was referred to the prosecution without detention and investigated on charges of breaking and entering.

Student A admitted, "I tried to steal the exam papers but failed." Subsequently, student A withdrew from the school. The school disposed of the compromised exam papers and created new ones for the exam. A police official stated, "Since the attempt to steal the exam papers was unsuccessful, charges of obstruction of business were not applied."

Meanwhile, in Andong, there was another incident involving a break-in at a school for the purpose of leaking exam papers. The North Gyeongsang Provincial Police Agency plans to refer temporary teacher B (in their 30s) to the prosecution on July 18 on charges including breaking and entering.

At around 1:20 a.m. on July 4, B, along with parent C (in their 40s), broke into the administrative office of a high school in Andong but was detected by the security system. The school identified the intruders through CCTV footage and reported the incident to the police at 9:38 a.m. on July 5. During the investigation, it was revealed that they had also broken into the school several times in the past without authorization.

Administrative office director D (in their 30s), who was identified as an accomplice, deleted CCTV footage at the request of parent C starting from June 28, and helped B gain access to the school by registering B's fingerprints in the school security system. Although B resigned in February 2024, it was found that access to the school was still possible through the registered fingerprints.

The police believe that since 2023, they have illegally disabled the school security system at least seven times. Currently, B, C, and D are all in custody.
