Land Ministry Forms Committee to Investigate Osan Retaining Wall Collapse

The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport announced on the 18th that it will operate the Central Facility Accident Investigation Committee in connection with the collapse of the reinforced earth retaining wall at Gajang Intersection in Osan City.


The committee has decided to focus on clearly identifying the cause of the accident and developing measures to prevent similar incidents. Under the Facility Safety Act, the Minister of Land, Infrastructure and Transport can form and operate a committee to investigate accidents that result in damage above a certain scale.


Land Ministry Forms Committee to Investigate Osan Retaining Wall Collapse On the afternoon of the 16th, a 10-meter-high retaining wall of the overpass at Gajang Intersection in Osan City, Gyeonggi Province, collapsed onto the road, covering two vehicles. Firefighters are conducting rescue operations. Provided by Gyeonggi Provincial Fire and Disaster Headquarters, Yonhap News Agency.

Out of the 100 experts belonging to the 4th Central Facility Accident Investigation Committee, up to 12 experts specializing in fields such as soil engineering, design and construction, and reinforced earth construction methods will be selected. The committee is scheduled to operate for a little over two months, from July 21 to September 20. If necessary, the period can be extended.


The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport will provide support such as coordinating with related agencies, and the Korea Infrastructure Safety and Technology Corporation, which operates the secretariat of the investigation committee, will serve as the secretary and be responsible for committee operations. The committee will begin its activities on July 21, starting with on-site investigations. It will review related documents such as design drawings and conduct hearings with relevant parties to determine the cause of the accident and establish measures to prevent recurrence.
