On July 18, Lee Myeonghyeon, the special prosecutor investigating allegations of interference in the investigation of the death of Sergeant Chae, requested an arrest warrant for Kim Kyehwan, former Marine Corps commander.

This marks the first attempt to secure a suspect in custody since the launch of the special prosecutor's office for fallen marines.

The special prosecutor's office announced to the media that "this afternoon, we requested an arrest warrant from the Seoul Central District Court for the suspect Kim Kyehwan on charges including perjury in favor of another."

The special prosecutor's office stated, "At the time of Sergeant Chae's death, Kim was serving as the Marine Corps commander and was the superior who gave instructions regarding the transfer of investigation records to Colonel Park Junghoon, head of the Marine Corps investigation team. There is substantial reason to suspect that the suspect has committed a crime, the crime is serious, and there is a high risk of evidence destruction. Therefore, we believe that an arrest investigation is necessary."
