The Ministry of National Defense announced on July 18 that it plans to reward service members who contributed to protecting the lives and property of the people by refusing to follow illegal orders from superiors during the 12·3 Martial Law last year.
A ministry official met with reporters in Yongsan, Seoul, on this day and said, "The Ministry of National Defense's Audit Office is currently verifying the facts regarding service members who upheld their duty as soldiers by refusing to follow illegal or unjust orders during the 12·3 Martial Law," and shared this plan.
The official explained, "This is intended to help restore morale within the military," and added, "If it is found that efforts were made to protect the lives and property of the people, rewards will be given."
According to the Ministry of National Defense, the verification process by the Audit Office is expected to take about one to two weeks. The ministry explained that enlisted personnel who are recognized for their merit may be eligible for early promotion, while junior officers may receive benefits related to long-term selection. The official further stated, "The second half officer promotion review is approaching, and these considerations may also be reflected in the promotion review committee."
Meanwhile, Ahn Gyu-baek, the Minister of National Defense nominee, stated at a National Assembly confirmation hearing held on July 15, "I will ensure strict accountability regarding the illegal martial law."
