Baekseok University Signs Preservation Agreement with Jeju Haenyeo Culture Association

Baekseok University Industry-Academic Cooperation Foundation announced on the 18th that it has signed a memorandum of understanding with the Jeju Haenyeo Culture Association to collaborate on the documentation of the Jeju Haenyeo Culture, which is recognized as UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, as well as to promote the value of marine cultural resources and develop educational content.

The Jeju Haenyeo Culture Association and the Baekseok University Industry-Academic Cooperation Foundation held the signing ceremony on July 15 aboard the Mujigae Yacht at Doduhang Port in Jeju City, with representatives from the Dodu Haenyeo Association, Mujigae Yacht (CEO Yang Moonbong), and the Korea Coast Guard Education Institute in attendance.


Through the agreement ceremony, both sides agreed to make joint efforts for the succession and development of Jeju Haenyeo Culture through collaborative research and preservation, as well as to contribute to the advancement of the drone industry and the revitalization of the local economy.


With this agreement, the two organizations plan to continue their cooperative relationship for the succession and development of the 'Jeju Haenyeo Culture' by jointly promoting Jeju Haenyeo Culture, activating underwater filming and underwater drone technology, and pursuing the joint development of marine culture and safety content.


Yang Jonghoon, Chairman of the Jeju Haenyeo Culture Association, stated, "I am pleased to work together with the Baekseok University Industry-Academic Cooperation Foundation Unmanned Aerial Center to preserve Jeju's unique haenyeo culture, which has been recognized by UNESCO, and to pass it on to future generations. Our association will also actively support the thorough documentation of the intangible Jeju Haenyeo Culture so that it can be handed down as tangible cultural heritage to the next generation."


Lee Geunho, Director of the Baekseok University Industry-Academic Cooperation Foundation, also said, "Jeju haenyeo are the pride of Jeju and have played a key role in supporting the local economy. To record and preserve the Jeju Haenyeo Culture, which is listed as UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, we will share and lead the activation of our nation’s top underwater drone technology for underwater filming."
