Declaration of Responsible Politics for Shaping the Future
"Politics should not be merely the operation of a system; it must serve as a catalyst for real change in the lives of our residents. The very moment a smile appears on the faces of our people, the reason for the council's existence becomes even clearer."

Choi Hunsik, chairman of Uiseong County Council, made this statement in a special interview with this newspaper marking the first anniversary of his inauguration. He emphasized, "I will continue to focus on practical legislative activities that prioritize the field and the livelihoods of our residents." He reflected that, under his belief that "politics is not about words, but about results," he has quietly upheld a politics of action and responsibility over the past year.
◆ "A Year of Relentless Effort: Seeking Answers with Residents in the Field"
Chairman Choi cited "the field" as the most memorable aspect of his tenure. "It has been a time of relentless effort to narrow the gap with our residents," he said, adding, "The council must stand on public sentiment, and only when it reflects those voices in institutions and policies does it become a truly living body."

◆ On the Front Lines of Wildfire Response: Practicing Responsible Politics in Crisis
The large-scale wildfire that swept through Uiseong in March served as a stark reminder to Chairman Choi of a politician's responsibility.
"That disaster was not just about damage; it was a national crisis that threatened the very right to survival of our residents. The council could not remain silent, and I had to respond through action."
Immediately after the wildfire broke out, he was the first to visit the site, listened directly to the voices of residents, and urged the executive branch to take practical recovery measures such as support for temporary housing, livelihood assistance, and the provision of agricultural machinery. In addition, through the Gyeongbuk City and County Council Chairpersons' Association, he proposed and adopted a joint statement urging the enactment of a special law for wildfire damage recovery, taking the lead in broad-based cooperation.
◆ "The Remaining Term: A Time for Recovery and Innovation"
Chairman Choi stated that, during the remainder of his term, he will focus on three main areas: the completion of wildfire recovery, the revitalization of the local economy, and the design of a sustainable structure where youth and rural communities can coexist.
"Our policies must serve as a turning point so that residents can return to their daily lives. I will create opportunities not only to overcome crises, but also to improve the fundamental structure of our region."
He revealed plans for the council to take the lead in designing and driving resident-focused initiatives such as old downtown regeneration, youth job creation, enhanced support for small businesses, and rural revitalization.
◆ Harmony of Cooperation and Oversight: Realizing Practical Legislation
"The role of the council lies in maintaining balance, even before exercising authority."
Chairman Choi stressed his principle of building the council on two pillars: constructive cooperation and proper oversight.
He emphasized that, in addition to official meetings, informal communication and prior coordination are also important, underscoring the significance of trust-based politics to enhance policy effectiveness.
"Ultimately, what matters is bringing about real change in the lives of our residents. In that process, cooperation is essential, and oversight is a responsibility."
◆ "Politics Is the Practice of Change, Not Mere Words"
When asked about his political philosophy, he was resolute. "Politics is about solving problems and presenting solutions together with residents through practical action. Local councils must be problem-solvers, not mere watchdogs."
He stated that transforming residents' issues into institutions, budgets, and policies is the essence of local politics, declaring, "I will prove the reason for politics' existence through tangible achievements that change people's lives."
◆ "Resident Participation Is Uiseong's Competitive Edge"
Concluding the interview, Chairman Choi expressed his sincere respect to the residents who did not lose hope and stood together even amid disasters. He added, "The voluntary participation and solidarity of our residents are the most powerful assets for Uiseong's future," and pledged, "I will continue to be a chairman who works in the field alongside our residents."
