Unannounced Day and Night Crackdowns Until August 24
The Jeonnam Provincial Police Agency and the Jeonnam Autonomous Police Committee announced on July 17 that they will conduct a "special crackdown on drunk driving" until August 24, as the summer vacation season begins.
The number of drunk driving traffic accidents in Jeonnam decreased by 7.7%, from 233 cases during the same period last year (as of the 16th) to 215 cases. The number of fatalities caused by drunk driving also dropped from 4 to 3. However, with the official start of the vacation season, there are concerns that drunk driving may increase as people get swept up in the festive atmosphere. As a preemptive measure, authorities plan to carry out a special crackdown.
To this end, authorities will conduct "spot crackdowns" by frequently changing inspection locations not only around vacation spots, entertainment districts, and busy downtown areas?where outdoor activities and traffic volume are expected to rise?but also in school zones, near golf courses, and at highway tollgate entrances and exits. Additionally, to raise public awareness and prevent drunk driving after drinking the night before or during meals, they will conduct regular inspections during commuting hours and lunch breaks, both day and night.
Authorities also plan to conduct multifaceted publicity campaigns using various media such as VMS (Variable Message Signs), banners, leaflets, and campaigns around intersections and entertainment districts.
An official from the Jeonnam Provincial Police Agency stated, "If a drunk driving accident occurs, we will impose aggravated penalties under the Act on the Aggravated Punishment of Specific Crimes for causing death or injury by dangerous driving. We will also confiscate vehicles from habitual offenders and punish passengers who abet drunk driving. We ask for the interest and participation of Jeonnam residents in creating a culture that eradicates drunk driving."
