According to the city on July 17, local tax refunds mainly occur in cases such as when a vehicle for which automobile tax has been prepaid in a lump sum is transferred, deregistered, or scrapped, or when local income tax is refunded following a finalized national tax return and subsequent tax adjustment.

As of the first half of this year, Iksan City had a total of 5,078 cases of unclaimed refunds, amounting to approximately 226 million won. The city plans to send out notification letters to all eligible recipients to inform them about the refunds.

Unclaimed local tax refunds can be checked and applied for through Wetax, the “Smart Wetax” app, or Government24. If online application is difficult, taxpayers can contact the Collection Division by phone.

In particular, it is more convenient to use the “Local Tax Refund Account Pre-registration System,” which allows refunds to be processed automatically without a separate application when a refund occurs. Pre-registration is available through Wetax, Smart Wetax, the Collection Division, and local administrative welfare centers in towns and neighborhoods.

A city official stated, “Unclaimed local tax refunds are extinguished if not claimed within five years from the refund decision date, so we will make greater efforts to notify taxpayers,” adding, “We will do our best to protect taxpayer rights and build a trustworthy tax administration.”
