Seo-gu, Gwangju Launches "Dream Shining Study Room Project"

Enactment of the "Ordinance on Support for Alleviating Child Housing Poverty"

Seo-gu, Gwangju, has enacted the city's first "Ordinance on Support for Alleviating Child Housing Poverty in Seo-gu" and, based on this, will actively promote the "Dream Shining Study Room Project."

Seo-gu, Gwangju Launches "Dream Shining Study Room Project" Kim Ikang, mayor of Seo-gu, Gwangju, is working on replacing wallpaper and flooring with members of Seo-gu Honors and officials from Mujindong Social Welfare Center on the 17th at a multi-family house in Geumho-dong, Seo-gu, as part of the 'Dream Shining Study Room' residential environment improvement project under the Seo-gu Honors program. According to Seo-gu on July 17, this project aims to support the healthy development of children by providing comfortable and stable learning spaces for those living in poor housing conditions.

This year, Seo-gu will improve the residential environments of 13 households by offering customized support such as replacing wallpaper and flooring, organizing and storage, and installing desks and beds.

In particular, this project is the result of public-private partnership. Seo-gu Honors, a group of major donors in Seo-gu, is sponsoring 17.55 million won, and Seo-gu public officials raised 12.45 million won through the "MBTI Donation Challenge Bazaar," bringing the total project budget to 30 million won.

The first round of support took place on July 17 for a single-parent household receiving basic livelihood assistance. On this day, Kim Ikang, mayor of Seo-gu, along with Seo-gu Honors members and officials from Mujin Welfare Center, visited the household and participated in replacing wallpaper and flooring as well as organizing and storage work.

The household consists of a mother and her three children, making a family of four. They were living in both poor housing and educational environments, relying on irregular daily wages.

Another beneficiary family had just welcomed their fifth child in a home where mold and dampness had caused severe hygiene problems, making the separation of study and play spaces an urgent need.

Seo-gu plans to continue providing support to the remaining selected households in sequence.

Kim Ikang, mayor of Seo-gu, said, "This project has become even more meaningful as the warm sharing led by Seo-gu Honors donors has been joined by the voluntary participation of public officials. Going forward, we will continue to close welfare gaps through public-private cooperation, ensuring that the positive influence of Seo-gu, the Good City, brings real change to people's lives in every community."
