On July 17, Gwangju City announced that it will distribute an additional 560 electric vehicles in order to achieve carbon neutrality and improve air quality.

The city decided to provide support for a total of approximately 560 additional electric vehicles, including about 400 electric passenger cars and about 160 electric trucks, as the supply initially announced earlier this year was quickly exhausted.

The subsidy criteria will remain unchanged. Subsidies will be provided differentially according to vehicle type and performance, taking into account both national and municipal budgets. Specifically, up to 9.1 million KRW will be provided for mid- to large-sized electric passenger cars, up to 13.6 million KRW for small electric trucks, and up to 70 million KRW for mid-sized electric vans. However, after September, if the municipal budget is exhausted, only the national subsidy will be available, and individual buyers will only be able to receive the national subsidy through the Korea Environment Corporation.

Applicants must be citizens who have resided in Gwangju for at least 90 days, or companies and organizations with registered business locations in the region. Subsidy recipients are required to operate the vehicle for a mandatory period of eight years, and prior approval is required if the vehicle is sold to another region within two years. If the vehicle is illegally scrapped or transferred during the mandatory operation period, the subsidy will be reclaimed.

Citizens who wish to purchase a vehicle can sign a contract at a car dealership and submit the necessary documents. The dealership will complete the final procedures through the Ministry of Environment's integrated zero-emission vehicle website.

Na Byungchun, Director of the Climate and Air Policy Division, emphasized, "Citizens' interest in electric vehicles continues to rise," and added, "We will do our best to provide administrative support so that more citizens can benefit."
