Determined for This Year's Final Major, The Open
Preparing a 4-Iron Instead of a Utility Club for Strong Winds
Made the Cut in 2017 (62nd) and 2024 (72nd)
Younghan Song has expressed his determination ahead of this year's final major tournament, The Open.
On July 16, through the Korea Professional Golfers' Association (KPGA), Song stated, "This will be my third time competing at The Open, but it always feels like my first time. I believe my previous two experiences will be a great help. I think quickly adapting to the course conditions and the weather will be crucial."
He added, "To prepare for the strong winds, I brought a 4-iron instead of a utility club," explaining, "Long irons are more stable for controlling the ball in windy conditions." Song expressed his ambition by saying, "First, I want to make the cut. I also have a strong desire to achieve my best result ever." In previous appearances at The Open, he made the cut both times, finishing tied for 62nd in 2017 and tied for 72nd in 2024.
Last month, Song finished tied for second at the Mizuno Open on the Japan Golf Tour (JGTO), earning one of the three qualifying spots for The Open. This year, six Korean players, including Song, K.J. Choi, Byeonghun An, Sungjae Im, Joohyung Kim, and Siwoo Kim, will participate in the tournament. The best result by a Korean player in this event is second place, achieved by Joohyung Kim in 2023. This year's tournament will be held from July 17 to July 20 (local time) at Royal Portrush Golf Club in Portrush, Northern Ireland, United Kingdom.
