Pukyong University Graduate Students Simultaneously Win Excellent Paper Awards at Earth Science Union Conference

Jung Hyun Park, Goeun Kim, and Jonghan Lee Recognized for Outstanding Research Achievements

National Pukyong University (President Bae Sanghoon) announced on July 16 that graduate students Jung Hyun Park, Goeun Kim, and Jonghan Lee from the Department of Earth Environmental System Science were each awarded the Excellent Paper Presenter Award at the recently held '2025 Korean Earth Science Union (KGU) Annual Conference'.

This academic conference, themed 'Space and Earth: Earth Science Beyond Boundaries', was held at the Osong Convention Center in Cheongju. It is an annual event jointly organized by major domestic academic societies related to earth science.

Doctoral student Jung Hyun Park quantitatively analyzed how errors in ocean heat transport in climate models affect Arctic sea ice prediction through a paper titled 'Impact of Underestimated Arctic Ocean Heat Transport in CESM2 on Arctic Sea Ice'. This research was supervised by Professor Kim Baekmin.

Master's student Goeun Kim revealed the correlation between fault zone structures and groundwater flow through field surveys in her paper, 'Structural Characteristics and Hydraulic Connectivity of Damage Zones: A Case Study of the Haegumgang Outcrop in Geoje Island'. This research was supervised by Professor Kim Youngseok.

Master's student Jonghan Lee presented a new methodology applying artificial intelligence-based Neural Ordinary Differential Equations (Neural ODEs) to the seasonal forecast of sea surface temperature in his paper, 'Seasonal Forecast of Sea Surface Temperature via Neural ODEs'. His research was supervised by Professor Moon Wooseok.

All three studies were conducted with the support of the 'G-LAMP Research Center' at National Pukyong University. The students were recognized for their outstanding research capabilities in fields related to the water cycle, including Arctic sea ice changes, groundwater flow, and seasonal forecasting.

The Pukyong University G-LAMP Research Center focuses on earth water cycle and climate change response technologies as its core research areas. The center actively supports student researchers' academic activities and is emerging as a global research hub in related fields.
