Reducing Costs and Enhancing Communication with Residents
Gwangjin District in Seoul (District Mayor Kim Kyungho) announced on the 16th that it has completed maintenance work on a total of 300 sidewalks to resolve pedestrian inconveniences caused by water pooling during rainy weather.
The district focused its intensive maintenance efforts on high-traffic areas for pedestrians, such as Jayang Intersection, Gunja Station Intersection, and around bus stops.

In areas where complaints about walking discomfort during rain had been consistently raised, the district implemented practical improvements such as adjusting sidewalk slopes and maintaining gutters, thereby enhancing both pedestrian safety and convenience. In sections where height differences between sidewalks and roadways caused water to pool or posed a risk of slipping accidents, the slope at the sidewalk entrance was gently adjusted to minimize water accumulation.
Gutter water pipes were installed at crosswalks and similar locations so that rainwater, which could otherwise flow into pedestrian spaces, could be quickly drained. This also helped improve the city's appearance.
Instead of replacing all old sidewalk blocks, the district switched to a "partial repair" method, selectively replacing only necessary sections according to on-site conditions. This approach reduced costs while maximizing maintenance effectiveness.
Another feature of this maintenance project was the attachment of construction notices to both contractor and district maintenance vehicles, making it easy for residents to identify who was carrying out which work.
Kim Kyungho, Mayor of Gwangjin District, stated, "We are continuously implementing a variety of practical improvement measures to both minimize pedestrian inconvenience and efficiently manage our budget," adding, "We will continue to provide reliable administration through systematic road management and active on-site communication."
