220 Tons of CO2 Captured Daily from Power Generation Facilities
Efforts to Convert into Resources Such as Dry Ice and Beverage Carbonic Acid
Anticipated Carbon Credit Benefits... Securing Conversion Technology
Kumho Petrochemical has completed and begun operation of an on-site facility that captures carbon dioxide and utilizes it as a resource.
On the 16th, Kumho Petrochemical announced that it had completed construction of a carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS) facility and officially started operations. This achievement comes about 19 months after construction began in December 2023. The newly established CCUS facility is located at the Kumho Petrochemical Yeosu 2nd Energy site in Yeosu, Jeollanam-do. It is capable of capturing up to 220 tons of carbon dioxide per day, or approximately 76,000 tons annually, emitted from the company’s own power generation facilities.

The captured carbon dioxide will be converted into various industrial resources?such as dry ice, carbonic acid for food and beverages, gases for welding and cutting, and materials for horticulture and wastewater treatment?through Kumho Petrochemical’s partner, K&H Special Gas. This realizes a circular structure in which carbon dioxide is reused across industries through 'resource utilization,' going beyond simple storage.
The completion ceremony, held on the same day at the Yeosu 2nd Energy Plant, was attended by Baek Jonghoon, CEO of Kumho Petrochemical; Jang Gapjong, CEO of K&H Special Gas; Kang Jaehwa, Head of Business at Hyundai Heavy Industries Power Systems (the construction company); Jeong Gimyeong, Mayor of Yeosu; Koo Chungon, Commissioner of the Gwangyang Bay Area Free Economic Zone Authority; and Kim Youngwoo, Commissioner of the Yeongsan River Basin Environmental Office. The attendees shared a progress report and exchanged a carbon neutrality agreement, then toured the facility to reflect on its significance.
Through the establishment of this facility, Kumho Petrochemical has also secured its own proprietary carbon capture process technology. By internalizing CCUS technology through self-investment, the company has not only achieved greenhouse gas reduction results but also established a favorable foundation for responding to future emissions trading schemes.
CEO Baek Jonghoon stated, "This CCUS facility will serve as a symbolic example of turning carbon dioxide from a 'cost' into an 'opportunity,' and marks a starting point that demonstrates the chemical industry can lead the way toward carbon neutrality."
