The prosecution has launched a compulsory investigation into suspicions that the verification of North Korea's destruction of its frontline guard posts (GPs) during the September 19 inter-Korean military agreement was inadequate.

Prosecution Raids Presidential Archives Over Suspicions of Inadequate Verification of North Korea's GP Destruction

The Criminal Division 5 of the Seoul Western District Prosecutors' Office, led by Chief Prosecutor Ha Junho, announced on the 16th that it has been conducting a search and seizure at the Presidential Archives in Sejong City since the 7th, securing relevant materials.

According to the prosecution, the Moon Jae-in administration is suspected of inadequately verifying North Korea's destruction of its GPs.

Under the September 19, 2018 military agreement, the two Koreas destroyed GPs within the Demilitarized Zone and conducted mutual verification. However, suspicions arose that the verification was not properly conducted after North Korea declared the annulment of the September 19 military agreement in November 2023 and quickly restored the previously destroyed GPs.

The Korea Retired Generals and Admirals Defense Association, a group of former military generals, filed a public interest audit request with the Board of Audit and Inspection in January last year regarding the alleged inadequate verification of North Korea's GP destruction. In March this year, the Board of Audit and Inspection requested an investigation by the prosecution.
