Dongducheon City Achieves Outstanding Results in Citizen-Oriented Projects
Selected for 175 Public Projects Including Traditional Market Parking Improvements and Pet Theme Park
Dongducheon City in Gyeonggi Province (Mayor Park Hyungdeok) has achieved significant results by strategically responding to public project competitions organized by the central government and Gyeonggi Province since the launch of the 8th popularly elected administration. From July 2022 to June 2025, a total of 175 projects were selected, securing a combined 62.3 billion won in national and provincial funding.
On July 16, Dongducheon City explained, "This achievement goes beyond simply securing external resources. The selected projects are mainly focused on improving citizens' quality of life, including initiatives such as the improvement of traditional market environments, designation as an education special district, and the creation of a pet theme park."
To actively respond to the shift by the government and Gyeonggi Province toward a public competition-based project system, Dongducheon City established a dedicated competition response team in 2023 and systematized its approach to project applications.
As a result, in 2023, the number of selected projects increased by 4.5 times compared to the previous year, and the amount of external funding secured rose by 53%.
This growth trend continued in 2024, with the number of selected projects increasing by 12.5% and the amount of funding secured rising by 28%.
Major public projects selected during the 8th popularly elected administration include: ▲ Traditional Market Parking Environment Improvement Project (13.4 billion won secured), ▲ Northern Region Pet Theme Park Construction Project (7.5 billion won secured), ▲ Designation as a Pilot Area for Education Development Special District (6 billion won secured), ▲ Low-Carbon Riverside Park Project (4 billion won secured), and ▲ Sangpaedong Vulnerable Area Living Condition Improvement Project (Saetteul Project, 3.1 billion won secured).
These projects are playing a pivotal role in driving Dongducheon City's progress across various fields, including revitalizing the local economy, strengthening educational infrastructure, and creating an environmentally friendly city.
The city plans to continue focusing on citizen-oriented projects in the second half of the year. Planned public competition projects for the latter half include: ▲ Specialized public rental housing for newlyweds and young people (approximately 122.9 billion won), ▲ Saengyeon 1-dong "Save Our Neighborhood" Project (approximately 9.6 billion won), which will invigorate the city through senior center remodeling, creation of public parking lots for residents, safe alleyway projects, and home repair initiatives, ▲ New Village Public Competition Project (approximately 34.1 billion won) to develop parks and parking lots in the area around Jungang Station, and ▲ Ecological Stream Restoration Project (approximately 28 billion won) to create a pleasant rest area by restoring Soyocheon. In total, four major projects worth approximately 194.6 billion won are being prepared.
Dongducheon City plans to further strengthen its public project competition system and continue its strategy focused on citizen-experience-oriented projects. In particular, the city will comprehensively consider local conditions and administrative capabilities, selecting and promoting highly effective public projects based on the principle of 'selection and concentration.'
Mayor Park Hyungdeok stated, "Given our city's low fiscal independence, it is especially important to achieve tangible public competition results that both citizens and public officials can feel. We will continue to actively discover public projects that benefit citizens' daily lives, secure more national and provincial funding, and accelerate regional development and the realization of citizen happiness."
