Strengthening Support for Resident Safety and Property Protection
Customized Insurance Policies for Every Stage of Life
On July 16, Geumcheon District in Seoul (District Mayor Yoo Seonghun) announced that it is implementing a range of tailored insurance policies to protect residents' lives and property from unexpected accidents and disasters.
Geumcheon District currently operates a total of six types of safety insurance: Resident Safety Insurance, Bicycle Insurance, Electric Mobility Device Insurance, Injury Insurance for Youth in Military Service, Wind and Flood Damage Insurance, and Liability Insurance for Public Facilities. Each insurance policy serves as a safety net that covers various aspects of residents' lives, including age, means of transportation, housing type, and military service status.
Resident Safety Insurance is automatically provided to all residents registered in Geumcheon District without the need for a separate application. It covers medical expenses resulting from accidents in daily life and funeral expenses in the event of death. Medical expenses are covered up to 500,000 won per person, and funeral expenses are covered up to 10 million won.
Bicycle Insurance automatically covers all residents and provides compensation for bicycle accidents that occur while riding, as a passenger, or as a pedestrian. Depending on the type of accident, it offers coverage ranging from 200,000 won to a maximum of 30 million won for death, disability, consolation payments for diagnosis or hospitalization, fines, and attorney fees. This insurance is valid for one year, from March 1, 2025, to February 28, 2026.
Electric Mobility Device Insurance is available to people with disabilities and national merit recipients who use electric wheelchairs or scooters, as well as seniors aged 65 and older. It provides liability coverage of up to 30 million won for third-party damages and up to 3 million won for attorney fees. The coverage period is one year, from April 20, 2025, to April 19, 2026.
Injury Insurance for Youth in Military Service automatically covers young people from Geumcheon District who are serving in the military, without requiring a separate application. It provides up to 30 million won in the event of injury or illness. It also covers death, disability, hospitalization, fracture and burn diagnosis, and consolation payments for mental illness. Accidents occurring during training, leave, or outings while on active duty are also covered.
Wind and Flood Damage Insurance compensates for damages caused by typhoons, heavy rains, and other wind and flood disasters. For basic livelihood recipients, those in the near-poor class, and small business owners, part or all of the insurance premium is subsidized.
The district also operates Liability Insurance for Public Facilities to cover accidents that occur while using facilities owned or managed by the district. This insurance compensates for physical and property damage, as well as loss prevention costs. In the event of an accident, claims must be filed with the relevant district office department within three years.
Yoo Seonghun, Mayor of Geumcheon District, stated, "Even minor accidents can pose a significant threat to our residents, so we will continue to expand insurance policies that provide practical assistance. We will strengthen customized safety welfare for each stage of life to create a city where everyone can feel secure."
