Planned for Application in Major Construction Projects
Hyosung Heavy Industries announced on July 16 that it has developed a "concrete durability enhancement technology" capable of suppressing rebar corrosion inside concrete structures.
The newly developed technology works by increasing the alkalinity of the concrete matrix to strengthen resistance to carbonation, while an external coating blocks the penetration of moisture and carbon dioxide. The core of the technology is its so-called "dual composite" structure, which effectively suppresses concrete carbonation?the main cause of rebar corrosion. Since 2023, Hyosung Heavy Industries has been conducting joint research on internal concrete reinforcement technology with Cheongju University and Dongnam Enterprise. The company also collaborated with KCC to jointly develop the external coating technology. This technology received certification from the Korea Concrete Institute in June.
According to the company, the coating offers more than ten times the elongation rate of conventional water-based coatings, effectively repairing microcracks on exterior walls. Its salt resistance performance in high-salinity environments, such as coastal areas, is also rated two to three times higher than existing products. Hyosung Heavy Industries first applied this technology at the Gwangju Gyeongan "Harrington Square River Park" site and plans to expand its use to major construction projects in the future. The company also aims to establish a quality management process based on data collected from each site to further enhance construction quality.
A company representative stated, "This technology is a convergence technology that ensures the long-term lifespan of buildings," adding, "It will serve as a foundation for enhancing the quality reliability of the Harrington brand."
