The police have launched an investigation into Moss Tan (Korean name: Dan Hyunmyung), a professor at Liberty University in the United States, who claimed that President Lee Jaemyung was involved in a violent crime during his youth.
The Cyber Investigation Unit of the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency announced on July 15 that it has begun investigating after being assigned a case in which a civic group filed a complaint against Professor Moss Tan for defamation by spreading false information.
Previously, the civic group Jayu Daehan Hogukdan accused Professor Moss Tan of making false claims during a press conference hosted by the "International Election Monitoring Group" at the National Press Building in Washington, United States, last month. According to the complaint, Professor Tan publicly stated that President Lee was involved in a group sexual assault and murder of a girl during his youth, was sent to a juvenile detention center, and therefore was unable to attend middle and high school.
Professor Tan, who entered South Korea, was scheduled to give a special lecture at 5 p.m. at the Hoam Faculty House at Seoul National University, hosted by the conservative group Truth Forum. However, the university canceled the venue reservation.
