Seok Sangyun, Chief of the Spine Center at Busan Bumin Hospital, has drawn attention from the academic community by winning the Gold Prize for Best Cervical Spine Paper for his research achievements that have enhanced the safety of cervical spine disease surgeries.
On July 5, Seok received the Gold Prize at the "2025 5th Annual Conference of the Korean Cervical Spine Research Society," held at the Choi Deokkyung Hall of Korea University College of Medicine. This marks his third consecutive year of being awarded, following Bronze Prizes in both 2023 and 2024.
The paper presented this year was a joint study conducted with Professor Seok Kyungsoo of Gangnam Severance Hospital. Its title is "Key Considerations for Preventing Vertebral Artery Injury during Uncinate Process Resection in Patients with Cervical Radiculopathy: Anatomical Relationship between the Base of the Uncinate Process and the Transverse Foramen."
This paper received high praise for anatomically identifying the essential preoperative checkpoints required to prevent vertebral artery injury during cervical radiculopathy surgery.
It is analyzed that the paper provides preventive guidelines for major complications that may arise during "uncinate process resection" performed on patients with cervical spine diseases such as cervical disc herniation, thereby significantly improving the safety and accuracy of the surgery.
In his acceptance speech, Seok stated, "My concerns about the treatment of cervical spine diseases led to this research, and I am very pleased that the results have been recognized by the academic society," adding, "I will continue to focus on improving treatment methods and conducting research for patients with cervical spine diseases."
In addition to this award, he has also received the "Young Researcher Award" from the Korean Spinal Neurosurgery Society and has been actively engaged in both domestic and international activities, including providing UBE (Unilateral Biportal Endoscopy) surgical education to medical staff at the University of Tokyo in Japan.
A representative from Busan Bumin Hospital commented, "Seok Sangyun's recent award will serve as an opportunity to elevate the standard of spinal disease treatment in Korea," and added, "We will continue to provide leading medical services in the field of spinal disorders."
