"Ship Repair Technology to Be Fostered in Busan"... Busan Urban Corporation Launches Industrial Partner Capacity Building Project

Busan Urban Corporation and Busan City have launched the 'Industrial Partner Capacity Building Project' to strengthen the competitiveness of the local marine ship repair industry.

This project is a key sub-initiative of the 'Yeongdo Economic Base Urban Regeneration Project,' which is underway in the Yeongdo-gu area. Its main focus is to cultivate professionals in the ship maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) sector and to support the acquisition of national technical qualifications.

On July 15, Busan Urban Corporation announced, "We have prepared a specialized training program to enhance the practical skills of local workers and job seekers in the ship repair industry and to proactively respond to future demand." The training will be conducted over three days starting July 16 and will be overseen by the Research Institute of Medium & Small Shipbuilding (RIMS), a specialized research institution in the shipbuilding and marine field.

The training program consists mainly of: ▲ theoretical education on ship maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO); and ▲ practical training aimed at obtaining the national qualification of 'Metal Coating Technician.' Notably, as global interest in ship repair is rising due to the recent expansion of the US Navy's MRO market, the program includes advanced courses to deepen understanding of MRO business.

The practical training will cover: ▲ theoretical properties and color understanding of coatings; ▲ principles of corrosion and prevention technologies; ▲ hands-on practice in hull coating and repair; and ▲ high-gloss coating and defect repair. The curriculum is designed to be closely aligned with field-oriented technical skills. Graduates will also be given additional opportunities for practical training to prepare for the national technical qualification exam.

Shin Changho, President of Busan Urban Corporation, emphasized, "The Daepyeong and Namhang areas are the core of Korea's ship repair industry, and cultivating professional talent is urgent to reach international technical standards." He added, "Through this training, we will continue to support local workers so they can acquire practical technical capabilities."
