China Accounts for the Largest Share,
Followed by Japan, Thailand, and Hong Kong
Viva Republica, the operator of Toss, announced on July 15 that the overseas offline payment volume of Toss Pay in the first half of the year grew fourfold compared to the same period last year.
Toss Pay is currently available in 55 countries. Payments are made in real time in local currency directly from the account linked to Toss Pay, without the need for currency exchange.
By country, China accounted for the largest share of payment volume, followed by Japan, Thailand, Hong Kong, and Malaysia.
Toss analyzed that the steady increase in overseas travelers, along with the revamp of the application's "Overseas Travel Home" feature, which consolidated necessary functions in one place, had a positive impact on the increase in transaction volume.
The introduction of a new "Incheon Airport" tab within the Overseas Travel Home in the first half of the year also contributed to this growth. The app was enhanced to allow users to check information such as departure hall congestion, airport parking locations, and even their boarding gate and boarding time directly within the app.
In addition, since December of last year, the "Smart Pass" feature, which allows users to pass through airport departure halls and boarding gates using facial recognition, has been available within the Overseas Travel Home. By pre-registering an e-passport, face, and boarding pass in the Toss app, users can pass through the departure hall at Incheon International Airport and certain airline boarding gates with facial authentication.
A Toss representative stated, "The significant increase in overseas payment transaction volume in the first half of the year is the result of seamlessly connecting various travel-related processes within a single app."
