Yongin City Launches Full-Scale Cheongmi Stream Water Quality Improvement Project

Laying the Foundation for Industrial Complexes and Urban Development in Baegam and Wonsam-myeon
by Expanding Livestock Manure Treatment Facilities and Managing Pollutants

Yongin City in Gyeonggi Province is set to launch a full-scale water quality improvement project for Cheongmi Stream, the key water system in the Wonsam-myeon and Baegam-myeon areas of Cheoin-gu.

Yongin City Launches Full-Scale Cheongmi Stream Water Quality Improvement Project Yongdam Reservoir, the uppermost stream of Cheongmi Stream. Yongin City plans to establish industrial complexes and urban development infrastructure in Baegam-myeon and Wonsam-myeon areas through water quality improvement and pollutant management around Cheongmi Stream. On July 15, Yongin City announced that it has established and will implement a comprehensive plan to improve the water quality of Cheongmi Stream. Cheongmi Stream originates in Yongin and flows through Anseong, Icheon, and Yeoju before joining the Namhan River. It plays an important role in the living environment of residents in Wonsam-myeon and Baegam-myeon, Cheoin-gu. Of its total length of 58.1 kilometers, 18 kilometers run through Yongin City.

The area surrounding Cheongmi Stream is subject to the Total Water Pollution Load Management System, requiring management to comply with the target water quality and allowable pollutant load for rivers as set by the Ministry of Environment.

According to the city, the biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) of Cheongmi Stream is 2.5 mg/L, which is considered "slightly good" (Grade II). However, the total phosphorus (T-P) concentration is high due to the influence of livestock manure, domestic sewage, and industrial wastewater, necessitating water quality improvement.

The city added that it has established a water quality management plan to maintain the target water quality set for each section of the water system and to manage the total amount of pollutants within the allowable load.

In particular, the city stated that water quality improvement and total pollutant load management are essential tasks in the Wonsam-myeon and Baegam-myeon areas, where there is strong urban development pressure due to the planned construction of a large-scale semiconductor industrial complex.

According to the comprehensive plan, the city will implement water quality improvement measures such as: expanding the Baegam livestock manure treatment facility (from 200 to 400 cubic meters per day); repairing and correcting misconnected sewage pipelines; managing and inspecting livestock manure from farms; and restoring the ecological stream and installing non-point source pollution reduction facilities. Through these efforts, the city aims to raise the water quality of Cheongmi Stream to "Grade Ia (very good)" and secure the total pollutant load, thereby laying the groundwork for additional industrial complexes and urban development in the Wonsam and Baegam areas.

Lee Sangil, Mayor of Yongin, said, "We will ensure the comprehensive water quality improvement plan proceeds without setbacks to contribute to the balanced development of Cheoin-gu."
