Chinese Man in His 60s to Stand Trial
Responds to Reporters: "I Believe I Did the Right Thing"
A man in his 60s who murdered his wife with a weapon just one week after a court-issued restraining order was lifted will now face trial.
According to the legal community on July 14, the Criminal Division 2 of the Incheon District Prosecutors' Office (headed by Chief Prosecutor Kim Heeyoung) recently indicted a Chinese national in his 60s, identified as A, on charges of murder and placed him under detention.
A is accused of stabbing his wife, B, also in her 60s, multiple times with a weapon in front of the entrance of an officetel in Bupyeong-gu, Incheon, at around 4:30 p.m. on June 19, resulting in her death.
Last December, he had received a temporary court order prohibiting him from approaching within 100 meters of B and restricting contact, due to a previous incident of aggravated intimidation. However, he committed the crime just one week after the order expired on June 12.
It was revealed that A went to the officetel on June 16, three days before the incident, but was unable to meet B. He reportedly attempted to visit his wife again the day before the murder.
Police responded to the scene on June 16, but assessed the risk to the victim as 2 points, which is lower than the emergency temporary measure threshold of 3 points.
On June 21, prior to his pretrial detention hearing at the Incheon District Court, A responded to a reporter’s question, "Do you have anything to say to your deceased wife?" by saying, "I believe I did the right thing."
When asked, "Why did you go to see her as soon as the restraining order ended? Do you not feel sorry for the remaining family?" he replied, "It's my house, so where else would I live if not there? I have nothing to be sorry for."
