The Gyeonggi Provincial Fire and Disaster Headquarters will conduct on-site safety guidance for universities in the province for one month starting July 14, in response to a series of recent laboratory explosions and fires at universities.
This safety guidance is a measure to inspect the handling of hazardous materials in laboratories, emergency response systems, and compliance with safety regulations.
In particular, the program will include education on safety rules for "incompatible hazardous materials," as well as instructions on the storage, handling, and disposal of small quantities of hazardous substances, and the use of fire safety equipment.
The on-site guidance will target laboratories at a total of 85 universities and graduate schools in the province. Each university will be provided with notice documents detailing safety precautions, and repeated, highly visible promotional activities will be conducted.
Kim Jaebyung, head of the Gyeonggi Provincial Fire and Disaster Headquarters, stated, "With a series of explosion accidents recently occurring in university laboratories, research labs have been revealed as blind spots for safety. We will continue to provide on-site, hands-on education and inspections to ensure that this safety guidance leads to effective prevention."
