The National Museum of Korea announced on July 14 that it will hold an academic event in conjunction with the special exhibition "New Nation, New Art: Grand Exhibition of Early Joseon Art" to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the Yongsan opening. The event will take place on July 17 and 18.

This event has been organized to enhance understanding of the works featured in the special exhibition and the value of early Joseon art. Leading experts from both Korea and abroad will participate, presenting their research achievements and a variety of perspectives.

On July 17 at 2:00 p.m., a special lecture by international scholars will be held at the small auditorium of the National Museum of Korea. Professor Itakura Masaaki of the University of Tokyo, who has studied East Asian painting and Buddhist art, and Professor Emeritus Ide Seinosuke of Kyushu University will take the podium.

Professor Itakura is a leading authority on East Asian painting research and has made significant contributions to the discovery of Joseon paintings preserved in Japan. In this lecture, he will provide an in-depth introduction to early Joseon landscape paintings, including those featured in the special exhibition, under the theme "Reconsidering Early Joseon Landscape Paintings: On the Occasion of Several Encounters." Professor Ide is a renowned scholar in the study of the production and distribution of Buddhist paintings from medieval China to Korea and Japan. In his lecture, titled "Goryeo and Ming, Two Norms: The Rise of Early Joseon Buddhist Painting," he will shed light on the international aspects of early Joseon Buddhist art.

On July 18, from 10:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., the academic symposium "New Nation, Art and Culture of Joseon" will be held at the main auditorium of the National Museum of Korea, co-hosted with the Korean Art History Association. The symposium will begin with a keynote presentation by Lee Aeryeong, Director of the Curatorial Research Division at the National Museum of Korea, followed by eight presentations on early Joseon art history and historical studies prepared by scholars from Korea and abroad.

The academic symposium consists of three sections. Part 1, "Continuity and Creation in Late Goryeo and Early Joseon Art," will examine the art styles of this transitional period through Buddhist sculpture, crafts, and painting. Part 2, "Joseon, the Aesthetics of a New Order: National Ideology and Art," will explore how ideological changes following the founding of Joseon influenced art and visual culture, focusing on architecture, crafts, and scriptures. Part 3, "Visualization of Neo-Confucian Ideals," will investigate changes in art that emerged alongside the maturation of Confucian culture in early Joseon.

In connection with these events, there will be two rotations of exhibited works in July. Since July 8, four calligraphy, painting, and ceramic works, including "Dongjeongchuwoldo," have been on display. Starting July 22, twelve new works, including "Sansudo," will be presented to visitors. This exhibition of "Sansudo," which exemplifies the characteristics of 16th-century Joseon painting, marks the first time it is being shown since the National Museum of Korea acquired it last year.
