Pohang Enhances Urban Landscapes for APEC Summit, Boosting Global City Image

Symbolic Sculptures Installed at Key City Gateways Such as Pohang Gyeongju Airport and Pohang Station
Lighthouse and Whale-Shaped Flower Towers, Outdoor Flower Beds... Creating a Sophisticated Urban Image

In preparation for the APEC Summit to be held in Gyeongju this November, the city of Pohang has officially begun creating welcoming landscapes to greet domestic and international delegations and guests.

During the APEC (Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation) Summit, the city is installing flower towers and outdoor flower beds at symbolic locations such as Pohang Gyeongju Airport, Pohang Station, and major downtown intersections. The aim is to enhance the city’s image and foster a welcoming atmosphere.

In front of Pohang Gyeongju Airport, a flower tower shaped like a 'lighthouse' symbolizing Pohang will be installed. The lighthouse, embodying the identity of Pohang as a maritime city, is intended to deliver a message of warm welcome and hope to visitors, just as a lighthouse guides the way at sea.

In Pohang Station Plaza, a flower tower shaped like a 'whale,' a symbol of the marine ecosystem, will be created. The whale represents Pohang’s vibrant urban image and is expected to become a striking landmark that captures the attention of tourists and visitors. Both flower towers will be approximately 4 meters in height, with a harmonious blend of artistic design and landscaping to maximize visual impact.

Additionally, at the Daejam Intersection traffic island, an outdoor flower bed themed around the '2025 APEC Summit' will be established. On an area of about 1,000 square meters in this busy downtown location frequented by citizens and vehicles, a variety of seasonal flowers will be planted. The city aims to spread the festive atmosphere and enhance its status as a key partner city by naturally extending the event’s ambiance.

This landscape improvement project has been underway since July through a professional contractor, with both installation and maintenance scheduled to continue until mid-November, when the summit concludes. From the initial setup to the final removal, the city is prioritizing the completeness of the landscape and ensuring safety throughout the process.

Shin Kangsoo, Director of the Green City Project Group, stated, "Although Pohang is not the main host city, we are preparing to welcome guests from around the world as a partner city," adding, "We hope that the landscapes embodying Pohang’s charm will create a positive first impression."
