Resource Circulation, Fugitive Dust Control, and Citizen Participation Policies
Achieving a 23% Reduction in Ultrafine Dust Concentration over Four Years
The city explained that, with this selection, it has received awards for four consecutive years. Previously, the city was named "Best" in 2022, "Commendation" in 2023, and "Excellence" last year in the same evaluation.
This year’s evaluation divided 31 cities and counties in the province into three groups according to population size, and assessed them based on 22 detailed indicators across three main areas: the level of interest from institutional leaders, management of fine dust emission sources, and performance in implementing seasonal management measures.
The city stated that it achieved tangible reduction results by precisely managing fine dust emission sources within residential areas and actively promoting the adoption of eco-friendly vehicles and the low-emission conversion of old vehicles.
In particular, through eco-friendly policies aimed at increasing recycling rates and reducing unnecessary incineration, the city achieved a reduction in waste generation from 34,854 tons in 2023 to 31,894 tons last year, a decrease of approximately 2,960 tons.
In addition, the city has implemented practical, community-focused environmental policies, such as conducting surveys on fugitive dust at construction sites, strengthening urban air quality management, and organizing environment education and forums with citizen and student participation.
In fact, the city’s annual average concentration of ultrafine dust (PM2.5) was analyzed to have decreased by about 23%, from 22 micrograms per cubic meter in 2020 to 17 micrograms per cubic meter last year.
The city plans to review best practices from other cities and counties and incorporate them into its policies. Furthermore, it intends to designate redevelopment and reconstruction areas as intensive fine dust management zones, and to implement specialized projects such as installing AI ventilation systems and introducing fine dust reduction facilities at bus stops.
Park Seungwon, Mayor of Gwangmyeong, stated, "We will continue to advance our environmental policies with greater precision to protect citizens’ health and enhance the city’s sustainability."
