The establishment of a Georgia Institute of Technology research institute in Incheon is expected to move forward in earnest.
On July 14, Incheon City announced that on the 11th (local time), Mayor Yoo Jeongbok visited the main campus of Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta, USA, and discussed various measures with President Angel Cabrera, including the establishment of a Georgia Tech research institute and global industry-academic cooperation in the field of advanced AI autonomous manufacturing.
The city explained that this visit was significant in that it advanced further discussions on the establishment of a research institute in Incheon and reaffirmed mutual commitment, based on the mutual cooperation agreement signed last month between the Incheon Free Economic Zone Authority and Georgia Tech. Accordingly, the Incheon Free Economic Zone Authority will soon begin working-level consultations with Georgia Tech.

Incheon City plans to create a global hub for convergence among world-class research, education, and industry, and to build an ecosystem where innovation circulates positively, by attracting the Georgia Tech research institute (in the field of advanced AI autonomous manufacturing) alongside existing infrastructure such as the five universities located at Incheon Global Campus (IGC), the Korea Stanford Center (smart city research), and the Marine Jugend Korea Institute (marine convergence research).
Founded in 1885, Georgia Tech is a world-leading public research university in science and technology, ranked 36th globally according to the 2024 Times Higher Education (THE) rankings. In particular, it is ranked 12th in the world in Engineering & IT and 22nd in Computer Science, placing it among the global top tier. According to the 2024 U.S. News & World Report, its aerospace engineering programs are ranked 2nd in the United States for both undergraduate and graduate levels.
Mayor Yoo stated, "If the Georgia Tech research institute is established in Incheon, it will promote innovation in advanced manufacturing industries and make a significant contribution to strengthening national research capabilities. As the research institute is also expected to attract investment in related industries, we will actively support its smooth establishment."
President Angel Cabrera of Georgia Tech said, "Incheon is a city with advanced industries and global innovation capabilities, and has great potential for future development. By linking with the many Korean companies that have entered Georgia, this will be an excellent opportunity to simultaneously strengthen the manufacturing industries of both regions."
