The July auctions by K-Auction and Seoul Auction will take place on the 22nd and 23rd, featuring 104 lots (worth approximately 8.7 billion won) and 77 lots (worth 5.9 billion won), respectively.
On July 23 at 4 p.m., K-Auction will hold its auction at its headquarters in Sinsa-dong, Gangnam-gu, Seoul, with Kim Whanki's "Hangari" (1958) among the featured works. The bidding for this piece will start at 950 million won. Created in Paris in 1958, this work reinterprets the Joseon white porcelain, which Kim Whanki cherished, through a modern pictorial language. It is regarded as a piece deeply imbued with Eastern sensibility and lyricism.
Yoo Youngkuk's "Work" (1994), which highlights geometric structure and bold colors around the theme of mountains, will start at 500 million won. The thick, simplified white lines flowing across a canvas of deep navy and black vividly express Yoo Youngkuk's confession: "I did not paint mountains, I painted myself."
In addition, a significant number of works by both Korean and international female artists, including Yayoi Kusama, Choi Wookkyung, Ha Taeim, and Ayako Rokkaku, will be presented. The auction will also feature "Liberated Homeland" by Kim Koo.
The Seoul Auction July sale, scheduled for July 22 at 4 p.m. at the Seoul Auction Gangnam Center, will be organized under the theme "Blue," gathering works centered on the color blue. Highlights include Lee Ufan's "East Winds" (1984), whose blue lines evoke the artist's unique serene and contemplative world, and Kang Yo-bae's "Umburi-Baekrokdam," which powerfully captures the primal energy and spiritual resonance of Jeju's nature. Large-scale works by Swiss artist Ugo Rondinone, with blue horizons and skies filling the canvas to create a meditative atmosphere, will also be available to new collectors.
Among international artists, Ayako Rokkaku's "Untitled" will be up for auction. This piece, featuring a charming character seamlessly blended into a vibrant background, showcases the artist's signature finger-painting technique and stands out for its expressive freedom and vitality.
Notably, this auction will also include a one-year use voucher for an 8-pyeong unit at Jangheung Art Storage. Opened by Seoul Auction in the second half of last year in Jangheung, Yangju, Gyeonggi Province, this state-of-the-art art storage facility is equipped with security, disaster prevention, and climate control systems. While the regular annual fee is around 24 million won, bidding for this voucher will start at 10 million won during the auction.
