Ticket Sales Reach 122 Million Dollars in North America in First Week
Global Revenue Hits 217 Million Dollars... Break-Even Point Within Sight
Hollywood's DC Studios has signaled its comeback with the release of the film "Superman."
According to reports by U.S. media on July 13 (local time), citing figures from market research firm Comscore, "Superman" opened in 4,135 theaters across North America on July 11 and earned $122 million (approximately 168.3 billion KRW) in ticket sales over its first three days. This marks the third-highest opening weekend performance among all films released in North America this year.
This is the first time in eight years that DC Studios has surpassed the $100 million mark in its opening week since "Wonder Woman" ($103 million) in 2017. In the meantime, films such as "Justice League" (2017), "Shazam!" (2019), "The Flash" (2023), and "Joker: Folie a Deux" (2024) either received poor reviews or failed at the box office.
The newly released "Superman" is the first film in the newly established DC Universe. James Gunn, who directed the "Guardians of the Galaxy" series at Marvel Studios, took office as co-CEO and directed the film himself. Although it did not surpass the $166 million opening week record set by Zack Snyder's "Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice" (2016), it achieved a similar level to the $117 million earned by "Man of Steel" (2013).
Warner Bros., which owns DC Studios, estimated the global box office revenue for "Superman" in its opening week at $217 million (approximately 299.4 billion KRW). The film's production cost is reported to be about $225 million (approximately 310.4 billion KRW).
