"The Answer Is in the Field"... Gimcheon City Conducts Proactive Inspections of Disaster-Prone Areas for Summer

Mayor Nakho Bae Conducts Safety Inspections at Five Key Sites
Strengthening Field Administration for Climate Crisis Response

Nakho Bae, Mayor of Gimcheon, has fully activated the city’s response system to natural disasters such as heavy summer rains and typhoons, prioritizing the protection of citizens’ lives above all else.

In particular, Mayor Bae has personally visited five disaster-prone sites to conduct thorough on-site inspections, putting into practice proactive disaster response administration suited to the era of climate crisis.

On July 11, the city conducted intensive inspections at five areas with concerns of flooding or structural collapse: the intersection in front of Yuhan-Kimberly, the flood recovery site at Ingi Miso Stream, the Gwangcheon and Pyeonghwa drainage pump stations, and the area around Sineum-dong Post Office.

This inspection went beyond simple document reviews or office directives. Instead, the mayor visited the sites himself and, together with department heads and field managers, worked to identify safety blind spots through a practical, on-the-ground approach to administration.

Mayor Bae emphasized, “With frequent localized downpours and unexpected disasters, disasters are no longer someone else’s problem. Truly protecting citizens means identifying issues firsthand in the field and preparing effective improvement measures.”

He added, “Preventing disasters before they occur is far more important than post-disaster recovery when it comes to safeguarding citizens’ lives and property from natural disasters.”

On site, the inspections focused on flood prevention and drainage capacity, structural reinforcement of vulnerable areas, and the management of ongoing recovery projects. Special attention was given to the operational status of drainage pump stations, the power supply systems, and evacuation routes during heavy rain, with an emphasis on real-world response capabilities.

Based on the findings from this inspection, Gimcheon City plans to promptly carry out follow-up measures, including a comprehensive analysis of disaster risk factors, structural reinforcement of at-risk facilities, revision of response manuals, and the establishment of a continuous management system for vulnerable areas.

The city will continue to establish a proactive disaster response system appropriate for the era of climate change and will further expand citizen-focused safety administration that seeks solutions in the field.
