American lightweight boxing champion Gervonta Davis, known as the "Lightweight Tyson," has been arrested by police on charges of assaulting his ex-girlfriend.

According to local media reports including the Associated Press on July 11 (local time), Miami Beach police urgently arrested Davis in the Doral area of Florida based on a warrant and placed him in jail. The charge is a misdemeanor level of domestic violence.

On the day of his arrest, Davis posted bail of $10,000 (about 13.8 million won) and was released from the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center in Miami. According to CBS, he did not respond to questions from reporters at the time of his release.

The incident in question occurred on June 15, which was Father's Day. Davis visited his ex-girlfriend's home to pick up his two children, which led to a heated argument that escalated into a physical altercation.

The victim told police that Davis did not want her to take the children and told her to get the children out of the car. She further claimed that as she was trying to take her daughter out of the car, Davis moved the seat from the driver's side and struck her in the back of the head and face. She added that this caused an injury to her lip.

The woman immediately sent a text message to her mother saying, "Davis is being violent," and when her mother arrived at the scene, the victim was crying and raising her voice at Davis. Police also obtained video footage of the incident. The video reportedly shows Davis throwing a box at the woman during the argument.

Davis, who is from Baltimore, began boxing at a young age and was a promising athlete with an amateur record of 221 wins and 5 losses. His high knockout rate in matches earned him the nickname "Lightweight Tyson." After turning professional, he became a world champion in three weight classes: super featherweight, lightweight, and super lightweight.

Currently, a detailed investigation and legal proceedings regarding the assault charge are underway. Davis's side has not yet released an official statement.
