Coupang Leads in Flexibility and Satisfaction

Among major domestic courier companies, Coupang was found to provide the most flexible working environment. Overall job satisfaction was also reported to be high.

On July 11, the Korea Society of Logistics Science and Technology, through the Gallup Korea Research Institute, released the results of a "Courier Work Conditions and Satisfaction Survey" conducted among 1,203 delivery drivers (excluding directly employed drivers) from six courier companies: Coupang, CJ Logistics, Hanjin, Lotte, Logen, and Kurly. The percentage of respondents who said they "work five days or less per week" was highest at Coupang (62.0%), followed by Kurly (5.0%), Lotte Courier (4.0%), Hanjin and CJ Logistics (1.5% each), and Logen (1.0%).

The proportion of drivers taking five or more days off per month was highest at Coupang (66.7%), followed by Kurly (20.8%), CJ Logistics (11.5%), and Logen Courier (8.0%). The proportion of those taking eight or more days off per month (equivalent to two days per week) was also highest at Coupang (49.7%), followed by Kurly (5.0%), Lotte and Logen Courier (3.0% each), Hanjin Courier (2.5%), and CJ Logistics (0%).

When asked about the experience of taking three or more consecutive days off, Coupang ranked highest (49.0%), followed by Hanjin Courier (23.0%), CJ Logistics (19.0%), Lotte Courier (18.5%), Logen Courier (17.8%), and Kurly (8.9%). The society explained, "Looking at the percentage of respondents satisfied with the average number of working days per week, Coupang (52.3%) exceeded half, while Hanjin Courier was lowest at 35%."

The average monthly total income for delivery drivers was calculated at 5.71 million won. By company, Kurly reported 5.78 million won, Coupang 5.70 million won, Lotte Courier 4.99 million won, Logen Courier 4.95 million won, CJ Logistics 4.94 million won, and Hanjin Courier 4.71 million won, in that order.

A total of 92.4% of respondents rated their job satisfaction as "average or above." In terms of overall job satisfaction, Lotte Courier scored highest (61.9 points), followed by Coupang (61.0 points) and Logen Courier (60.9 points). These three companies also ranked highest in satisfaction with the number of working days and work intensity.

When asked about their intention to continue working as a courier, drivers at CJ Logistics (67.6 points) responded most positively, followed by Coupang (66.3 points). Drivers delivering nighttime parcels for Coupang and Kurly cited "less traffic congestion" and "higher income compared to daytime delivery" as reasons for preferring night deliveries.

Kwon Yongjang, president of the Korea Society of Logistics Science and Technology, stated, "Through this survey, we were able to quantitatively identify the actual working conditions and job satisfaction of courier drivers, as well as the differences in working conditions by company. We hope that these findings will serve as a reference for improving the working environment of courier drivers by drawing on best practices."
